Al Wasl University, a non-profit higher education institution in the United Arab Emirates, was established in 1986 AD with the visionary leadership of His Excellency Juma Al Majid and the support of the Dubai government. Its primary mission is to serve as a platform for scientific endeavours, a hub for human development, and a vital resource for the Emirati community.
Dedicated to advancing knowledge and culture, Al Wasl University focuses on strengthening the unique cultural identity of Emirati society across various academic disciplines. The university provides free undergraduate studies in Islamic studies and the Arabic language, while postgraduate programs and others incur a nominal fee. The academic structure follows a semester system with eight semesters, allowing students to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years.
Recognizing the need for growth, the university expanded its offerings over the years. In 1995/1996 AD, a master’s program in Islamic law was introduced, followed by programs in Arabic language and literature in 2002-2003 AD. Doctoral programs in Islamic jurisprudence and Arabic Language and Literature were launched in 2004/2005 AD and 2007/2008 AD, respectively. These initiatives aimed to prepare students for in-depth study and research, producing academically qualified individuals for societal benefit and contribution to universities and research institutions.
The primary language of instruction at Al Wasl University is Arabic, with exceptions for English language and translation specializations. English serves as a supporting language in programs taught in Arabic, while Arabic is taught as a supporting language in the English language major. Bachelor’s degree programs typically span four years, while postgraduate studies involve an introductory year followed by thesis preparation.
The postgraduate stage commenced in the academic year 1416 AH (1995/1996 AD) with a focus on Islamic Sharia, specifically in Jurisprudence. The program later evolved to a Master’s degree in Islamic Sharia, specializing in Jurisprudence and its Principles. Responding to community needs, the institution introduced a one-year preparatory study with reduced weekly hours, facilitating increased focus on research.
In pursuit of its aspirations, Al Wasl University initiated a Master’s program in Arabic Language and Literature in 2002-2003 AD, featuring divisions in Language and Grammar, as well as Literature and Criticism. Furthermore, doctoral programs in Islamic law and Arabic language and literature, encompassing language and grammar, and literature and criticism sections, were introduced in September 2004 AD and the academic year 2007-2008 AD, respectively.
Since its establishment, Al Wasl University has benefited from the expertise and dedication of a group of experienced scholars and professors. These individuals have been entrusted with the responsibility of instructing and fulfilling the institution’s noble mission for which the organization was founded.
